Time Boundaries

Let’s talk about boundaries around your time.  Does that word “boundaries” scare you?

Boundaries are simply “fences” you put in place around something to protect it and keep other things out of that zone. Boundaries can be made and altered, shifted and even removed based on timing and circumstances. They don’t have to be permanent structures. But they do serve a purpose.

If you’re wanting some extra space in your day it’s great to start with a few simple boundaries.  When everything is crowding in around you and you feel like you’re suffocating a little bit, putting a boundary in place helps reposition things so you can breathe again and approach your tasks from a fresh perspective.

For example, if time management is an issue for you, try setting aside a specific (and reasonable) amount of time for a project and then protect that time.  You can set your phone on “do not disturb” for 30 minutes while you hammer out some emails or complete a chore around the house. Play your favorite soundtrack and give yourself 4 songs to clean the bathroom. (Hint: upbeat songs help me work faster!) Then reward your efforts with a 10 minute self-care break of your choice.

Block off a chunk of time after you drop the kids off at school that’s a “no fill zone” and don’t commit to anything during that time.  Cross that time chunk off your calendar like it’s not even there and just say no if someone asks you to fill it. Use that special time for something life-giving to you like taking a walk or bath, or simply sitting still in silence for a few minutes. Whatever floats your boat!

Creating breathing room and break times isn’t selfish.  We all need to breathe to live, right?  Give it a try today and let me know what worked for you in the comments.
